Blaw Knox K721

Contents

Overview

“Knursling” type “K721” is depicted in Northern Powergrid document [NSP/004/030]. This document dates the type to 1930 and carries the remark “Typical drawing numbers (33.4/576)”. Blaw Knox as designer is assumed from the K number. Examination of drawing number ranges suggests that K721 came after E177 (the highest-known E contract from 1932–33) and before K1373, the earliest-known K contract (1935–38). The year of 1930 seems a little early.

There is so far no evidence to support the idea that K721 was designed for a line terminating at Nursling. All known K721 lines are in north-east England, while Nursling is in Southampton. The other “Knursling” type indicated by Northern Powergrid is Blaw Knox K9906 which is indeed an SWE type used for the line between Nursling and Lepe.

Thus far it has proved impossible to learn anything of any kind from Northern Powergrid. Other mistakes in their material mean that any item of information could be wrong, including the year of 1930. The “typical drawing numbers” are not a recognised number format, so this does not offer any insights in itself.
