33 kV concrete pole lines in the UK
Overview
Of the UK’s many 33 kV lines, concrete poles were rare.
Currently the only known type was SEE SL1 (South East England Secondary Line contract 1), that ran from Brighton to Worthing. This was a double-circuit line built using centrifugally-cast concrete poles. This line no longer exists.
The dimensions in [Marshall] (1933) illustrate the poles as 42 feet tall, with crossarm widths of 8′–6″ (top and bottom) and 10′–6″ (middle). Earth and pilot wires were carried below the phase conductors. The drawing appears to show a stay attached at the pilot wire level to a point on the ground 14′–9″ from the pole, but does not indicate what this dashed line actually represents. A single stay to one side doesn’t make sense for a straight-line pole.
The standard span was 400 feet, and the poles carried 0.1 square inch copper conductors.
