Overview

L134 is a distribution tower type designed by Milliken Brothers. The towers were used for the power line from Maentwrong hydroelectric power station to Crewe via Legacy substation, surviving now only as far as Legacy. This line is said to have been 66 kV, although it is presently only 33 kV and reduced to single circuit. The towers look to have sufficient clearance for 66 kV, so 66 kV operation seems to be a valid claim. L134 is one of a few tower types that does not have extended middle crossarms.

Tower forms

Only three tower types are known: “intermediate”, transposition and “anchor & terminal”. The intermediate tower has two crossarm types: triangular for normal conditions and square-ended for road crossings. The anchor tower appears to cover all deviation angles; its upper limit of deviation angle is not known.

Three sizes of intermediate tower are given on the erection diagram: 41′–0″, 47′–0″ and 53′–0″. These are not overall heights; rather, they are the heights of the body below the bend line. The 47′–0″ version corresponds with the height of the anchor tower and is being taken as the standard height tower, with a rather beastly actual height of 66′–6″.

Only one transposition tower is presently known, found in Bryneglwys, Denbighshire. This can be seen from a distance on Google Street View, from which the diagram above has been adapted from the anchor tower on which it appears to be based.
