Cherry MX Low Profile
Contents
Overview
Cherry MX Low Profile is a low profile switch design placed under the “MX” umbrella. While it uses the same gold crosspoint contact design as MX, and accepts some of the same keycaps as MX (so long as they are suitable for the shape and size of the switch), it is otherwise a completely new design of switch.
MX Low Profile was introduced on the 12th of January 2018. There have only been two models today: the standard linear model with a red plunger (MX1B-L2NA) and the speed model with a silver plunger (MX1B-52NA). Both are “RGB” switches in that they are designed to accommodate an external RGB SMD LED placed under the switch. The speed model was introduced later in the year, on the 25th of October. Cherry’s press release indicated that they had signed an exclusive partnership with Corsair for the new speed switches.
In the MX part number schema, MX Low Profile switches use the prefix “MX1B”. “B” replaces “A” which denoted SPST-NO in regular MX switches.
Cherry would later follow MX Low Profile with MX Ultra Low Profile, which is a fundamentally different design.
