The Interesting Man

The post below (reproduced exactly, with all the line breaks missing) appeared in February 2024. The author would have you believe that the image contained within the post is “broken”. Just how plausible is this?

Slightly off topic :) It so happened that my sister found an interesting man here, and recently got married ^_^ (Moderator, don't troll!!!) Something doesn’t ring true about this claim.

Corruption in JPEG images almost always affects 8×8 or 16×16 pixel blocks. The top row of what are purported to be bad DCT blocks is 18 pixels high. This is highly improbable. The bottom row of “corruption” reaches all the way down to the bottom of the image, which is impossible.

JPEG image data runs left-to-right. The “corruption” in the image above runs right-to-left. This is almost certainly impossible.

Look closely and you’ll see that the “corruption” doesn’t even reach the edge of the image. This too is almost certainly impossible.

A corrupt DCT block in a baseline JPEG image tends to break the remainder of the image, causing pixel shift, incorrect colour and complete image loss. For progressive images, corrupt DCT blocks are not always noticeable is they may only affect the level of detail. Presumably someone out there somewhere would actually be fooled by the alleged damage to the photograph; perhaps someone who is also interested in practical fish keeping.

I don’t think that I’d qualify as an “interesting man”, but under these circumstances I don’t believe that I would ever want to.
