Overview

T163 is a distribution tower type designed by Milliken Brothers. T163 was used for contract NWE SL2. Based on the schematics, the D10° tower is of the suspension type just as with Milliken E177 and Milliken PL1, although it has so far only been seen without deviation or with tension insulators (tension insulators also being found on some D3 towers). “N.W.E. S.L. 2.” is only an annotation and may not be the original contract for which the towers were designed; the recovered drawings note only “Contract T163” with no details of the contracting organisation or power line contract.

The general arrangement drawing for the D10 tower (LT629-23) has been annotated “.075 conductor”; the conductor type (HDBC, SCA, SCC etc) is not noted.

The D10 towers both in Wiltshire and in Carlisle have a bottom panel of the basic tower that does not match the official drawing. The drawing appears to be correct, unless the towers have been modified in later life.
