Selected Win32 applications
In these spyware-ridden times, the idea of finding decent and trustworthy Windows software without getting yourself diseased with malware seems very daunting. Hence, I have posted a list of some of my favourite Windows applications to help you on your way. In alphabetical order:
-
Adobe Reader SpeedUp
A program to reliably disable undesirable plugins from Adobe Reader to speed up its launch time (unlike doing it by hand which makes it crash); freeware. There is also Foxit Reader: faster but uglier.
-
HexEdit
A decent freeware hex editor; version 2 will be open source.
-
IcoFX
A free icon editor, that supports icons up to 256×256 32-bit as well as custom sizes, and has a built-in disc browser.
-
mp3DirectCut
Lossless crop, fade and gain adjustments for MP3 audio; freeware.
-
Mp3tag
Comprehensive ID3 tag editor; freeware.
-
Media Player Classic
Slim open source media player that resembles Windows Media Player 6.
-
Pidgin
Open source multi-protocol instant messaging client that lets you chat with Windows Live Messenger, AIM, Yahoo! Messenger and ICQ buddies and more within the same program, even within the same window. Although I’m trying to avoid obvious programs in this list, a lot of people seem to be missing the benefit of such a program.
-
Xenu’s Link Sleuth
Link checker for your Web site: run it and find all the broken links you need to be fixing! Freeware.
-
Zoom+
Nifty screen magnifier tool: fast and efficient. Also has screenshot and colour capture capability. Open source.
